Eleven Bra Fit Faults and the Measurement That Fixes Each One

Nearly every fault in a bra traces back to the band, and the band is almost always too loose rather than too tight. Diagnose from what the garment does — rides up, gapes, spills, digs, floats — and each symptom maps to one mechanical cause and one specific correction. Some faults are not size problems at all: a stretched band, a migrated wire or a bagged cup is out of conformance, and no size change recovers it.

Start at the band. Around eighty percent of the load a bra carries should be going through the band and into the rib cage, with the straps taking the remainder — and when a bra is doing something visibly wrong, the band is usually the reason, usually because it is too large.

That single bias explains why so many faults cluster. A loose band rides up at the back. Riding up drops the front of the garment, so the gore lifts off the sternum. The load transfers to the straps, so the straps dig and leave grooves. The cups tip forward as the band climbs, so tissue escapes at the top edge and under the arm. Four different symptoms, one cause, and four different sizes people try in response.

So run the diagnosis in order. Band first, then cup volume, then cup shape, then construction. And before any of that, check the garment is still in conformance at all — a band that has lost its elastic recovery will produce every symptom on this page while being exactly the right size.

  1. The band check, before anything else

    Three tests, each taking about five seconds, and they settle most of it.

    Fasten on the loosest hook and look at yourself sideways in a mirror. The band should sit level all the way round and parallel to the floor. If the back sits higher than the front, it is too loose. A brand-new bra should be wearable on the loosest hook — that is what the other rows are for as the elastic gives.

    Slip both straps off your shoulders and let your arms hang. The cups should stay exactly where they are. If everything drops, the band is not holding, and nothing you do to the cup will change that.

    Slide two fingers flat under the band at the back and pull. You should get about two to three centimetres of lift and no more. Four or more and it is too loose; if you cannot get the fingers under at all, it is too tight and the row below applies.

    One caveat worth stating plainly. A band that passes all three tests and still hurts is not a size problem — it is either a band too narrow for the volume it is carrying, or a garment past its serviceable life. Both are covered further down.

  2. Eleven faults, their causes and their corrections

    Two rows are worth reading twice. Row two, because strap grooving is the single most misdiagnosed complaint in the category — people buy padded straps, wider straps and cushioned sleeves for a problem that lives four inches lower down. And row seven, because wire sitting on tissue is nearly always read as a wire that is too big when the wire is in fact too small to span the root, which is why sizing down makes it worse.

  3. Faults that look like size and are not

    A handful of complaints survive every size change because size was never the variable.

    A wide breast root. The wire has to span from the sternum to a point past the outer edge of the tissue. If your root is wider than the wire the range draws at your coordinate, the wire will sit on tissue at both ends whatever letter you pick. The tell is that going up in cup fixes it briefly and then produces a gaping upper edge, because you have bought width by buying volume you do not need.

    Close-set tissue with a high gore. Some ranges draw a tall centre gore as standard. On close-set tissue that gore has nowhere to sit, and it will lift no matter how correct the volume is. A plunge or a lower gore solves it and no size does.

    Tissue that sits low on the chest wall. Cups graded with the fullness at the top will gape at the upper edge and spill at the bottom simultaneously. That is a shape mismatch, and the answer is a cut with the volume set lower — a full cup with a seam under the apex rather than a moulded balconette.

    Asymmetry between sides. Normal, common, and not fixable by size. Size to the larger side, then shorten the strap on the smaller side and use a removable pad if the gap is visible under clothing.

    A rib cage that expands substantially on inhale. If the band is comfortable at rest and unbearable at full breath, the issue is band width and elastic modulus rather than circumference. A wider band spreads the same tension over more skin and usually settles it.

  4. When the garment is out of conformance

    Elastic does not fail suddenly. It gives up gradually, and the symptoms it produces are identical to a bra that was always the wrong size — which is how people end up buying three sizes in a row and blaming their body.

    These are objective thresholds. Take the measurement, compare it against the row, and if it fails, the garment is done regardless of how much you like it.

    Run these seven checks before you buy another size. Any single failure means the garment is out of conformance, and the size you replace it with should be chosen from fresh measurements rather than from the label on the failed one.

    Bands generally fail before cups, and cups generally fail before wires. Rotating between several bras so that none is worn on consecutive days lets the elastic recover between wears and pushes all three thresholds further out — but rotation delays the failure, it does not prevent it.

    One thing not to do: keep wearing a band on the tightest hook because it is the only one that still holds. That garment has passed its threshold, and the wire migration in row five typically follows within a few weeks.

  5. Order of operations when several faults show at once

    Multiple symptoms usually mean one cause and several consequences, so changing several variables at once loses the thread.

    Work in this sequence. Conformance first — if any threshold above has failed, stop and replace. Band second: correct the circumference, using the sister size so the volume does not move. Wear it for a full day, because a band that is right at 9am and wrong at 4pm is telling you something the mirror will not.

    Cup volume third: with the band settled, is tissue escaping or is fabric empty? Change one letter, not two. Cup shape fourth: gaping only at the top edge, wrinkling only at the apex, or spilling only at the underarm are all shape signals rather than volume ones, and each points to a different cut.

    Construction last. If the band, volume and shape are all correct and the garment still fails under load, you have reached the point where the style's grading has stopped matching what it is carrying — a wider band, a higher side wing, an internal sling, a four-hook back or a wired encapsulated build, depending on which part gave way.

  6. The scoop, and what it can and cannot do

    Put the bra on, lean forward, and use the opposite hand to sweep tissue from the underarm and the underside of the breast forward into the cup. Then settle the wire onto the rib cage. This is standard practice and it genuinely matters, because tissue migrates outward and upward over years of loose bands and will otherwise sit outside the wire where it produces underarm spillage.

    What it does: gets all the volume into the cup so you are assessing the actual size rather than a partly filled one, and it is the only honest way to judge whether a cup is too small.

    What it does not do: create volume, hold tissue in place if the cup is genuinely too small, or fix a wire that cannot span the root. If you scoop and the cup immediately overflows, that is a real answer — add a letter. If you scoop and everything stays where you put it all day, the size is right and it was the technique that was wrong.

    It also has to be repeated. A bra put on without scooping, on a body used to tissue sitting wide, will read a full letter smaller than it is.

  7. What a shop will actually tell you

    Expect the tape to come out and go straight around your ribs, and expect the number to be smaller than you were braced for. A shop that adds four inches to that figure is working from a chart rather than from you, and the size you leave with will be two bands loose.

    Expect to be told the band should be firm enough to feel slightly startling on the first day. That is accurate. A correctly sized band on a body used to a loose one feels tight for roughly a week, and then feels like nothing.

    Expect a good fitter to bring a range of coordinates rather than one, and to change band and cup together rather than separately. Somebody handing you a plain size up when you report spillage has not diagnosed anything.

    And expect honest fitters to say, at some point, that a particular brand does not make your coordinate. That is not a brush-off. Ranges stop where they stop, and there is no correction that reaches past the end of a size run.
