Nine Breast Shapes: How to Identify Yours and the Cup Construction It Needs

A size is a volume. Shape is where that volume sits inside the cup, and no size run carries the information at all — two people measuring an identical 32F can need cups with different depth, different seam placement and a gore 4 cm apart in height. Two measurements sort most of it: root width and projection. The matrix below gives the confirming test, the fault each shape produces, the construction that corrects it and the styles that will never work.

Volume and shape are separate variables and only one of them is on the label. Cup letter is a difference between two circumferences, which tells a manufacturer how much space to build and nothing whatsoever about how that space should be arranged.

So a 32F can be a breast root 17 cm wide sitting shallow against the chest wall, or a root 12 cm wide projecting a long way forward. Same volume. Same label. Two cups that share no useful dimension. Put the shallow body in the projected cup and you get a gaping apex on a bra that measures correctly, which is the exact circumstance that sends people back down a cup size and into overflow.

Work through the two measurements in the next section first. They will resolve maybe seventy per cent of shape problems on their own, and they turn the nine-shape matrix from a personality quiz into a lookup.

  1. Two measurements do most of the work

    Root width is the width of the base where the breast meets the chest wall. Lay a soft tape flat against your ribs, not on the breast, and measure from the point where tissue leaves the sternum to the point where it ends under the arm. Follow the chest wall. Most people measure between 11 cm and 19 cm, and a difference of 3 cm between two people at the same cup letter is entirely normal.

    Projection is what is left over. It isn't measured directly so much as inferred: the same volume spread across a wide root is shallow, and across a narrow root it is deep. That inference is the table below.

    Then check the two extras that decide gore width. Measure the gap at the sternum between the two roots — under one finger-width is close-set, over two finger-widths is side-set. And note where the apex sits relative to the inframammary fold when you stand relaxed with your arms down.

    Find your depth class, then match it to cup build: shallow needs a moulded or two-part cup with a wide wire; very projected needs a three-part cup with a deep lower section and a narrow wire. Buying across depth classes is what makes a correctly measured cup gape.

    Wire width follows root width directly. A wire whose chord — the straight line between its two tips — is more than about a centimetre wider than your root pushes tissue inward under the arm; one that is narrower sits on tissue at the side and produces the sore spot most people blame on the wire existing at all. Specialist ranges publish wire widths as narrow, average and wide. Mainstream ranges almost never do, which is a reasonable proxy for how seriously the range takes anything above a D.

    Match your shape row, then buy against the fourth column rather than against a style name. The fifth column is the more useful one: it tells you which garments to stop re-buying and blaming yourself for.

    Two shapes commonly get confused and the fix diverges hard. East-west and side-set both present as a gap at the front, but east-west is a direction problem and side-set is a distance problem. East-west needs the tissue brought forward, which a sling does. Side-set needs the wires moved apart and the gore widened, which a sling makes worse by dragging tissue toward a centre it cannot reach.

    Bell and relaxed also overlap. If the apex is below the fold, treat it as relaxed and go for the sling and the taller gore regardless of what the upper pole is doing.

  3. Asymmetry: fit the bigger side, every time

    A measurable difference between sides is ordinary. A full cup letter apart is common and two letters is not rare, and no size run addresses it because a bra is manufactured symmetrically.

    The rule is simple and people resist it: fit the larger side and pad the smaller. Fitting the smaller side compresses the larger one into overflow, and overflow is a visible, uncomfortable fault, whereas a slightly under-filled cup on the smaller side is neither.

    • Choose a cup with some knit or lace in the upper section. It absorbs a half-letter of difference without any padding at all.
    • Removable pads sold as bra inserts go in the smaller cup, at the bottom and outer edge — not the top. Placing them at the top pushes tissue up and out.
    • Set the strap on the smaller side one to two centimetres shorter. It is the quickest correction available and it costs nothing.
    • If the difference exceeds two cup letters, a specialist range with separate cup-depth options is worth the money in a way that a general-range purchase is not.
    • If asymmetry appears or changes noticeably over weeks rather than years, that is a question for a clinician, not for a bra. This site's coverage stops at the garment.
  4. Shape can't rescue a band that's wrong

    Nothing in the matrix above will work on a loose band. The band carries the large majority of the load in any correctly built bra, and when it rides up at the back the whole cup geometry rotates with it — the wire tips travel toward the armpit, the gore lifts off the sternum, and every one of the nine shapes suddenly presents the same fault.

    So the diagnostic order is fixed. Band first, on the loosest hook when new, level all the way round. Then wire width against root width. Then cup depth. Then shape. Anyone who reverses that order ends up buying a differently shaped bra that is wrong in the same way as the last one.

  5. When to re-check

    • After a bodyweight change of roughly 4–5 kg in either direction. Ribcage moves before cup volume does.
    • Through pregnancy, milk-in and weaning, where band and cup move on different schedules — the nursing timeline covers the expected movement stage by stage.
    • After starting or stopping a strength-training habit that changes the upper chest. Root width can widen without cup volume changing.
    • After any procedure that alters chest wall or breast structure, once your clinician has cleared you to wear a fitted garment again. Construction advice on this site is garment advice only.
    • When a bra you have owned for a year fits on the tightest hook and still rides up. That is elastic retirement, not a shape change, and it is diagnosed in the fit-fault reference.
  6. Shape and the Hold Index

    The Hold Index measures a construction, not a person: displacement control, band-tension comfort over eight hours, elastic retention at 100 wears, and headroom below the cup-size ceiling. Shape doesn't change those numbers.

    What shape changes is which construction you are allowed to choose from. A close-set body at a G is limited to low-gore builds, and low-gore builds carry a structural penalty, so the best available Hold Index at that combination is lower than it is for someone the same size who can wear a full cup. That's a real constraint and worth knowing before you spend an afternoon in a changing room being told the problem is you.
