Types of Bras: 18 Styles Rated by Cup-Size Ceiling, Coverage and Hold
Eighteen constructions cover the whole category, and each one has a cup letter above which it structurally stops working. That ceiling is a property of the build — gore height, seam count, band width, where the load goes — not of the brand on the label. The matrix below gives the ceiling twice: once for mainstream ranges and once for specialist ranges, because the same nominal style is graded two to four letters further in a specialist run.

Find the highest cup letter you actually wear. Cross out every style in the matrix whose ceiling sits below it. For most people that removes four or five of the eighteen in a single pass, which is a considerably faster route to a shortlist than reading eighteen product descriptions written by the people selling them.
The ceiling column is the point of this page. A style name describes a shape, not a capability, and the shape is only half the information. A plunge is a plunge because its centre gore is 1–3 cm tall. That single dimension is what caps it, because a short gore means the wire ends sit closer together and higher, and above a certain volume the wire stops landing in the root of the breast and starts landing on tissue.
Two ceilings are given because the same word means two different garments. A high-street plunge and a plunge from a specialist range share a silhouette and almost nothing else: different wire gauge, different seam count, different band width, different hook geometry. The gap between the two ceilings is usually two to four cup letters.
Three variables define every style here
Strip the marketing language out and any bra reduces to three measurable things.
Coverage is where the top edge of the cup crosses the breast relative to the apex. Above the apex is full coverage; at it is a demi or balconette; well below it is a plunge or a shelf. Coverage decides which neckline the bra can live under and how much of the upper pole the fabric is asked to hold.
Load path is where the weight ends up. In a wired bra it travels from the cup into the wire, along the wire to its two ends, and out into the band — which is why a wire that doesn't match your root width transfers load into soft tissue instead of into the ribcage. In a wire-free bra it travels through the cup fabric to the band and the straps, and the split between those two depends entirely on how well the band is doing its job.
- Gore height — the centre panel between the cups, measured from the base of the wire channel to the top edge. Plunge 1–3 cm, demi 3–5 cm, standard 4–6 cm, full cup 7–10 cm.
- Cup seam count — zero for a moulded cup, two or three for cut-and-sew. Every seam is a place the maker can change the direction of the fabric grain, which is how a cup is given depth without being given slack.
- Band width and hook geometry — a 2.5 cm band with two hook rows and a 7.5 cm band with four are different machines wearing the same word.
Eighteen styles, rated
Hold Index runs 0–100 and combines measured vertical displacement control, band-tension comfort across an eight-hour wear, elastic retention at 100 wears, and headroom below the construction's cup-size ceiling. The figure quoted is for the style fitted correctly at the middle of its own range, not at its ceiling. A construction scores its worst at the top letter it is offered in.

Only use the specialist column if the actual garment has the build features — band width, sling, seam count — listed in the large-bust construction spec; the word on the swing tag is not evidence. Compression sports bras are folded into the sports row above and they deserve a caveat. A compression bra flattens rather than encapsulates, and flattening scales badly: it works to about a C, and above that it converts vertical movement into a slower, heavier oscillation rather than removing it. Any sports bra sold above a D that has no internal cup seams is a compression bra with a size label on it.
Two entries on that list are worth arguing about. Minimizers get a high number because they are genuinely well built — wide wire, wide band, full cup — and a bad reputation because they are sold as a way to look smaller rather than as a way to be held. And longline scores highest of anything that isn't a purpose-built sports construction, purely because band area is the single most effective lever in the whole category. If you have never worn one and you are above an F, that is the experiment worth running.
Necklines: what actually goes under what
Neckline compatibility is usually presented as a style question. It isn't. It is a gore-height and strap-position question, and once you know your cup ceiling the honest answer for some necklines is that there isn't a good option and the outfit is the thing that should change.

A low-back converter on a 3 cm band is the least bad version. Read the fourth column first if you are above an F — it tells you which of the first two answers survives at your size and which one was only ever true at a B cup. The five that fail first
- Adhesive cups. The shear strength of the adhesive is fixed; breast mass is not. Above a B they peel from the bottom edge, and most wearers find that happens within about two hours of standing.
- Plunge above a DD in a mainstream range. The gore is 1–2 cm and the wire ends are set too close together, so the wire climbs out of the root and sits on tissue. This is the single most common source of the belief that underwire is inherently painful.
- Push-up above a D. Padding displaces tissue that has to go somewhere, and where it goes is over the top edge and out under the arm. The pad is adding volume to a cup that already has none spare.
- Shelf cups. No top edge means the entire load is on the lower cup and the band. Fine at a B. Structurally pointless above it.
- Mainstream strapless above a DD. It fails on band tension, not on grip: the only way to stop the garment dropping is to tighten the band past the point where it stays tolerable for a full evening. Silicone grippers are treating the symptom.
What a working rotation looks like
Five garments, not fifteen. Most wardrobes contain a lot of bras that fail the ceiling test and two that don't, and the two get worn to death while the rest sit in the drawer being evidence of money spent.
Buy in this order and stop when the problem goes away.
- Two everyday bras in the highest-Hold construction that suits your neckline range. Above an E that means a three-part cut-and-sew or a structured balconette, not a moulded t-shirt bra.
- One sports bra with encapsulation. If you are above a D and the sports bra has no internal seams, it is not a support garment.
- One problem-solver for the necklines the everyday two can't go under. Usually a plunge or a strapless longline.
- One garment a band size up, worn on the tightest hook, for the days your ribcage is not the size it usually is. Every fitter will tell you this and almost no size chart mentions it.
- Skip the fifth purchase until one of the first four wears out. Rotation is what extends band elastic life, and four bras in rotation outlast six bought at once and worn unevenly.
Where the ceiling numbers come from
A ceiling is the cup letter at which a construction can no longer keep the apex above the inframammary fold for a full eight-hour wear without the band having to be tightened past comfort. That is a testable statement, and it is the one this site tests.
It is not a claim that the size doesn't exist. Plenty of makers will sell you a plunge in a GG. The claim is narrower and harder: at that letter, the construction has run out of the things it uses to hold — gore height, wire length, seam count, band area — and the only lever left is band tension, which is a lever with a comfort limit rather than a structural one.
This is also why the mainstream and specialist columns diverge so far. Nothing about the silhouette changes. What changes is the hardware behind it, and hardware is measurable with a ruler in a changing room.
